In the presence of Her Majesty the Queen, representing the Charity Projects Committee, Chair Christine Smith and Secretary Yvette Fletcher attended the National Harvest Festival at Westminster Abbey on 16th October.
The Service gave thanks to volunteers and others working to deliver surplus food to those most in need. The CPC support the Livery Food initiative, providing gloves that are used in the handling and distribution of food on behalf of City Harvest.
We were in our seats an hour before the service. Once we had taken in the magnificence of the Abbey we then chatted to those sitting around us; members of other Livery Companies, drivers and a number working in agricultural settings. The Service was beautiful and included some highlights’ ; a number of favourite hymns including 'We Plough The Fields and Scatter’, the Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage, read his excellent poem “Bread of Heaven’. We appreciated a stunning array of flowers, barrows of fruit and vegetables, bread that smelled delicious, architectural wheat Sheaf Loaves and were impressed by the trailer of food driven in by tractor.
