The Saffranzunft (Guild) of Basel who have been in existence since the mid 1300's created a small piece of history yesterday by inviting their 1st ever Female Guest to their Ash Wednesday Lunch. 190 Liverymen and the Master Glover, Mrs Daphne Cave.

She was warmly welcomed by the Meister of the Saffranzunft
Her speech, starting and finishing in German made reference to the long association between the Glovers and the Saffranzunft, the mental health issues that many people are facing as a result of Covid and how with a resilient spirit, businesses and lives are slowly starting to return to a degree of normality.

This was extremely well received by those present.
Being introduced to the tune of Rule Britannia certainly added to the jollity of the very long and enjoyable lunch.
Towards the end of the lunch (5.30pm or so) new Liverymen take wine with the Meister they have various “vessels” that they can drink out of!

A ship (1.2ltrs), a shell and a Goblet. The wine MUST be drunk down in one, without stopping. If they choose the Ship to drink from (5 out of 8 did) plenty of loud cheering and an even louder drum roll.

Past Master and Liaison Officer (to the Saffranzunft) Chris Dadson escorted the Master to the Lunch
In the past there would have been a Parade around Basel, visiting the other Guilds. Unfortunately with Covid Rules, this was not possible.

At the end of the event all the attendees (including the Master) take home with them a small “Dragon Bag” of Chocolates
This is to keep the “dragon” at home happy!!
The Consort on this occasion had no problem with being called a Dragon.
