Following a convivial lunch, The Master, Lady Mistress and a group of Glovers set off to visit the London College of Fashion (LCF), to see in action the students at a Glove Making Master Class, sponsored by the Glovers. This is the 3rd year the Glovers have sponsored this course, however, this year the college have changed the style of the course, to run it as two 2 day courses, instead of the previous one 4 day course. This doubles the number of students who benefit from the master class.
The students learn how to cut a pattern from the leather, and sew a glove, using a variety of techniques and decorative stitching in order to make a hand sewn glove.
Darla Jane Gilroy, the course leader and Riina Õun were on hand to show us around and explain how the students were progressing. Darla explained how important this course was to the degree students, and how the techniques learned in the glove making masterclass, are taken forward into other accessory design. Also this year a video of the students at work is being made, showing the valuable links with City Livery Companies. The students were very enthusiastic and happy to show us their work.
