The Blue Mermaid Thames Barge. She is a replica of the original Blue Mermaid, sunk during the 2nd World war. Completed in 2019. She has no engine, and totally reliant on wind and sail.
The barge is run by the Sea Change Trust. They operate residential sailing courses for young people, vulnerable adults and sailing trainees; but also sail with groups of adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, and those with dementia and their supporters. Participants are able to fully engage in all activities on board, from handling sails and winding the windlass, to climbing the rigging and steering.
Living and working together, participants are able to develop a wide range of life skills. The Glovers have this year supported the barge with Sailing Gloves.
This year The Blue Mermaid took part in the annual Blackwater Barge match, and they finished a respectable 2nd place. Liverymen Hilary and Richard Miller had the opportunity go aboard after the race. Richard Titchener, CEO of Sea Change, thanked the Glovers for their generosity, the gloves have made a real difference for the crews whilst sailing.
