Assistant Yvette Fletcher is the Secretary to the Archaeological Leather Group and in January she attended a webinar presentation by Ken Stuart of Cornell University following which it was suggested that Glovers may be interested in knowing about a project to catalogue every known embroidered leather item up to about 1625 CE.
Ken informs us that to date, through some 470 publications and online museum catalogues, he has been able to document over 1,600 individual items. Most of these are shoes, but 33 (pairs of) regular gloves, 2 falconry gloves, and a single archery glove have embroidery as well.
About half of the regular gloves known to him come from the Glove Collection Trust website, which is an invaluable resource for projects of this type. He is grateful for those responsible for building and maintaining it. Based on source text and images there and elsewhere, he tries to determine whether the embroidery is directly on the leather. His collection omits items where the embroidery is done on some sort of cloth that is then applied over the leather, such as on a cuff. This is not always possible, but high-resolution photography helps a great deal and the GCT images usually make this distinction discernible.
Should anyone know of any others - or know any of these to be in error - he would appreciate being so informed. You can obtain his e mail address from Yvette. Likewise for any sources that may go into detail about aspects of embroidery on them, especially if done directly onto the leather, regardless of whether the embroidery was done with silk, linen, wool, or some kind of wire.
