Liverymen Sarah Jopling and David Burndred visited the Disabled Sailors Association (DSA) 35ft training catamaran, Spirit of Scott Bader, at Port Solent near Portsmouth in mid July. DSA’s mission is to enable people with any disability to sail. The Glovers have supported DSA for the last five years including provision of gloves to support their sailing activities. A more detailed 2024 article about the importance of gloves to DSA's activities can be found here .
We were greeted by DSA founder and driving force Mike Wood together with Skipper John who outlined DSA’s current programme offering sail training and experiences to various local and regional disabled support groups and also their advanced plans to commission a new training catamaran in mid-2026. The visit coincided with a group of students from Treloar’s arriving for a day’s sailing. Treloar’s has had longstanding links over many years with the Glovers and other Livery companies. Meeting the Treloar’s team and students (photos below) and seeing their excitement in learning about the boat and setting off in the sunshine for a day’s sailing was truly heartening.
