The Worshipful Company of Glovers of London went ahead with their annual Carol service with some amazing technological innovations. For the first time in our history we had a remote Carol Service using Zoom. The Master Richard Morris introduced the service.

Our service was led ably by fellow Glover the Reverend Prebendary Jeremy Crossley from within the beautiful Church of St Margaret’s, Lothbury. His prayers and address throughout the service were uplifting and brought home the religious beauty of Christmas. He also gave us hope for a better 2021.

The carols and music were provided by The Choir of King Edwards’s School, Witley founded in 1553. We all agreed that they sang beautifully and the photo of the choir in their magnificent Red Cassocks was lovely to see.

During the carols there were religious paintings and impressive videos from within the church that added splendour to the on-line service, thanks to Liveryman Sonja Garsvo who visited the Church specially to film and photograph to add to the event.

It was noticeable that, although everyone was muted, many Glovers and their guests were singing carols with gusto, although there were still a certain number who, as would have been the case if they had attended the live Carol service, demonstrated excellent miming skills!
The first lesson was read by the Immediate Past Master Roger De Courcey and when he finished there was a pause and several Glovers wondered if the Past Master was going to lead a carol by playing the magnificent white piano we could all see in the background. The second lesson was read by Vikki Smith and as a teacher clearly practiced in the art of zoom. The third lesson was read by our Master’s Apprentice Jamal Awolaja, bringing the wisdom of a legal mind, as he read The Wise Men being led by the star to Jesus.

The Master Richard Morris read the fourth lesson in front of a beautiful array of flowers, we assumed this was designed by the Mistress Vanessa Morris.

It was a lovely event with specific thanks to Jeremy Crossley for leading the service, our technical, editing and zoom experts Sonja Garsvo and Andrew Hicks and for their organisation of the event Lisa Page, Felicity Chadwick-Histed and Mark Butler our Clerk.
