On 12th December Charity Projects Committee Chair Christine Smith, Charitable Trust Board Chair Simon Somerville and CPC member Minnie Harris visited Open Bionics in Bristol for the culmination of this year’s Big Hero campaign. The campaign brings together three families of children with upper limb difference, the Open Bionics Foundation and the Glovers to raise funds to provide the children with myo-electric prosthetic Hero Arms, and 12th December was to be the day the children received the arms.

It was a day of great happiness and excitement for all involved. The Glovers were able to meet the children and their parents, help decorate a Christmas tree and enjoy the celebratory cake – all excellent reasons to make the trek to Bristol. The children’s parents were all very grateful for the Livery’s ongoing contribution to the Big Hero campaigns, and full of joy and hope for a more independent and confident future for the children.

The children themselves were enjoying playing and experimenting with their new arms and hands, and were becoming astonishingly adept already, especially when it came to holding large forkfuls of cake.

Our relationship with the charitable wing of Open Bionics has enabled us to support many adults and children in recent years. Of late, it has seemed the best use of our resources to focus on children and young people, and on days like this the rewards are truly heartwarming.
