The Master, CPC Chair Christine Smith and Assistant to the Clerk Katherine Ray recently attended the City of London Academy Islington (COLAI) awards.
The Glovers have a long-standing relationship with COLAI and present an annual award for outstanding community contribution. The award was presented by the Master to Joey Yang. In introducing the award, the Principal, Laurie Glees, gave the following introduction:
"The motto of the Glovers’ Company is ‘true hearts and warm hands’ and it was this motto that inspired an award that recognises a young person who demonstrates a community spirit, altruism and support of others. The student who is receiving this award is now heading towards her final GCSE exams next summer, having already achieved an impressive grade 7 in her Religious Studies GCSE this summer. I would imagine that many of you have already met her, as she has been a long-standing Academy Ambassador since, and routinely represents COLAI on tours, interviews, student panels and open evenings, including musical performances.
She is an active member of the school council, and last year ran for Islington Youth council, gaining many votes for her inspirational campaign and securing the position of the official school representative for COLAI at Islington Youth council meetings and events. She also has regular meetings with Islington Council staff on how to improve outcomes for Islington’s young people, including discussing strategies to improve school attendance.
This student goes over and above to look out for her peers. She is also unwaveringly polite, charming and confident, and greets me personally every morning with a huge smile and a “good morning, sir” before asking “how are you today?”.
She is respectful and even when faced with challenges, she never loses her integrity. I know other staff feel the same way too; she is always a welcome ray of warm sunlight in our busy days.
This year’s Worshipful Company of Glovers’ Community Contribution Award goes to Joey Yang".
