THE GLOVERS COMPANY TODAY

The Company liaises closely with the British glove and leather industries and supports many charitable causes especially City based charities and those associated with gloves.

CHARITABLE DONATIONS

Although the Company has an historic tradition of dispensing monies to charitable causes, it was not until 1975 that the Glovers Charitable Trust was formally established as the charitable arm of the Company. It is administered by a Board of Trustees, the Master and four Wardens.

The charity has wide aims. Each year the majority of charitable donations is committed in the field of education by way of bursaries to students at schools with which the Glovers have historic links and important donations are made in support of the UK glove trade. The Company assists with the relief of poverty and disability usually by the gift of gloves and also supports City, Livery and related heritage projects. There are strong linkages to units of the Armed Services to whom support is provided in a variety of ways.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership of the Company is open to men and women who have had a successful career, and to those interested in the history and traditions of the City of London and Mayoralty. Although closely associated with gloves and the gloving industry (mainly through the British Glove Association), this trade is not a requirement for membership.

Freedom of the City of London, which can be obtained through the Company, is the only pre-requisite for admission. A wide range of social activities helps the members to keep in touch with each other and with the Company’s affairs.

A PROGRESSIVE COMPANY

The Company is governed by a Court of Assistants, chaired by the Master who is elected each year and by four Wardens also elected annually who generally become the Master in succession.

There are a number of Committees which, under the guidance of the Court, deal with the matters of finance, charity, glove trade liaison and social affairs. Members of the Company are encouraged to take part in this work, and members of the Court are chosen from the active committee members.

THE GLOVING INDUSTRY

Those closely involved in the Gloving business have their own trade association – The British Glove Association – and many of their members are also members of the Livery.
